Art & Design
BackAll students will experience a rich and diverse art provision which offers students the opportunity to experiment with a wide range of materials, media and processes. Creativity is the foundation of learning in Key Stage 3 (KS3) and students will develop their technique and skill into Key Stage 4 (KS4).
GCSE Art and Design
The specification comprised of two components, Unit 1 and Unit 2. Unit 1 is worth 60% of the final GCSE and Unit 2 is worth 40%. Students will complete two projects in Year 10 and a further two in Year 11 (one of these being the unit 2 exam).
Assessment
All work produced in Year 10 is controlled assessment, so it is subject to JCQ guidelines and marks will not be given out, however, whole class feedback will be given. Students will sit two five hour mock exams in Year 10 and their final exam in Year 11.
The course is 50% Controlled Assessment and 50% Internally set exam.
GCSE Art and Design- Photography
Some students will complete and additional GCSE in art and design - photography as part of an afterschool provision on two evenings a week. The students start this GCSE in Year 9 and complete it in Year 10.

Homework
At KS3 homework will be set in accordance to the academy’s policy.
At KS4 students will be required to complete work as directed by the teacher, there is a strong emphasis on students working independently at KS4.
Books, Equipment, Materials and Resources Recommended/Needed
KS3
The academy will provide the equipment and materials needed for students to complete their work in lessons.
KS4
The academy will provide the equipment and materials needed for students to complete their projects in lessons. Students will also be given basic materials to complete their controlled assessment, however, students may wish to purchase additional items, these can be purchased through the school and a list can be provided by their teacher. KS4 students will be expected to purchase at least three sketch books during their studies.
Opportunities for Study beyond KS4
Art can be studied at college, sixth form or through apprenticeships.

Art is integral to so many subjects and the course can act as a gateway to so many careers, including but not limited to: artist, designer, teacher, illustrator and publisher.
